SERVE 4students

National Debate

In March 2004 we launched a National Debate in Kolkata, for which the NHRC (National Human Rights Commission) not only provided sponsorship, but sent one of their quartet, Dr Rao, to preside at the function. They proposed the motion “The Indian Education System does not support the rights of the student.” It resulted in a landslide defeat – but, significantly, despite the presence of such a dignitary, not a word appeared in the media. Still, Serve won accolades for the venture, and gained status. A second effort a year later was even more farcical for the conservatives who wanted no change in the status quo. These were important signposts, and demonstrated how serious SERVE was – and is – and how entrenched the opposition, however absurd the ground.image 1
